Resolving an NC DWI from Another State
If you received a DWI while visiting North Carolina but live in another state, you are likely facing a hold on your driver’s license. Because North Carolina shares data with other states through the Interstate Driver’s License Compact, an unresolved NC DWI will block you from renewing or keeping your license in your home state.
The good news? You do not need to travel back to North Carolina to fix this.
At Breathe Wellness, we specialize in helping out-of-state drivers satisfy North Carolina’s DMV requirements so you can get your driving privileges reinstated as quickly and painlessly as possible.
How the Out-of-State Process Works
We know navigating two different state systems can be confusing. Here is exactly how the process works, step-by-step:
Step 1: Let us handle your North Carolina Driving Record
-
What you do: Submit your initial paperwork and review fee to Breathe.
-
What Breathe does: Once received, we will request your North Carolina driving record directly from the NCDMV. Note: You do not need to obtain this yourself! When you get a DWI in NC, the state automatically creates a record for you, and we will pull it on your behalf.
Step 2: Complete your assessment and treatment at home
-
What you do: Complete your required substance use assessment and any recommended education or treatment with an appropriately licensed provider in the state where you currently live.
-
What Breathe does: If you haven’t located a provider yet, Breathe will help you find an approved, appropriately licensed facility in your home state that meets North Carolina’s standards.
Step 3: Breathe reviews your out-of-state documents
-
What you do: Submit your home-state evaluation, treatment records, and NC citation details to us.
-
What Breathe does: Our licensed specialists thoroughly review your out-of-state documentation to ensure it satisfies all of North Carolina’s specific legal requirements.
Step 4: We submit the official state filing (e-508)
-
What you do: Just wait for confirmation.
-
What Breathe does: Once all requirements are met, Breathe submits the required e-508 for state processing.
